Abstract:At the end of April in 1930, William Faulkner published his short story A Rose for Emily on the national magzine Forum. With the beginning of the heroine, Emily’s death, the story reflected the full view of a small southern town in America. However, to everyone’s surprise, the auther did not mention that who had ever sent Emily a rose. Therefore, this essay analyses the potential meaning of “ROSE” in the puzzled title, which is divided into three sections. In the first part, there are a brief introduction about the content of the short story and some related background. Then, the second part is divided into three aspects to set forth the symbolic meaning of “ROSE” from the surface to the interiority, which is the key of the essay. In the last section, the conclution is to be made to summarize the above points of view. Besides, this essay adopts the methods of analyse and comparison.

摘　要:1930年4月底，威廉·福克纳在全国性杂志《论坛》上发表了他的短篇小说《献给爱米丽的一朵玫瑰花》。小说由女主人公艾米丽的死亡开场，反映了美国一个南方小镇的生活全貌。但是，出人意料的是，作者并未在小说中提及是谁曾经送过艾米丽一朵玫瑰，因此，本文旨在从三个部分挖掘暗藏在这个谜样题目下的“玫瑰”的涵义。第一部分是简要描述小说的主要内容以及相关背景；第二部分将由浅入深地从三个层面来阐释“玫瑰”的象征意义，这部分也是本文的重中之重；最后一部分用以总结第二部分提及的观点。另外，本文采用分析和比较的研究方法。
