An Investigation of Cultural Gap between China
and Western Countries on Death Euphemism

Abstract: Language and culture are inseparable to each other. Language is the symbol of culture, and the culture is the carrier of language. As an indispensable part of language, euphemism plays a vital role in the life of society. This paper first explores the functions of euphemism. They are pragmatic function, social communicate function and cultural connotations. It then sets forth different death euphemisms between Chinese and English. Last but not the least, it elaborates the cultural differences between China and Western countries on death euphemism, from the view of euphemism’s functions. With the exploration of death euphemism, the author hopes this study can help people to improve their understanding of different societies’ attitudes towards death.

摘要：语言和文化彼此互不可分。语言是文化的象征，文化是语言的载体。委婉语作为语言的一个重要组成部分，在人们的生活中起着重要的作用。本文首先探讨了委婉语的功能，包括语用功能、社会交际功能和文化内涵功能。然后阐述了中西方不同的死亡委婉语。最后，通过委婉语的不同功能，详细分析了由死亡委婉语透露出的中西方不同的文化差异。作者希望通过本文的探究，让人们更好地了解不同社会的人们对待死亡的不同态度。
