 在香港都市社会的文化背景下出现的王家卫都市电影，竭力于揭示当代都市社会人的生存方式对当代香港人的精神压力与困境、内心情感表达渴望与自我保护、社会交往渴望与逃避等的深刻影响。王家卫以电影独白表达的方式深刻揭示电影人物的内心世界，关注都市社会中一种感情的拒绝与被拒，情感的疏离，爱的错失，以及人们选择用遗忘和孤独来逃避现实社会的现实。王家卫电影的都市表达通过边缘性人物的扭曲生活方式与独特或说变态的情感反应，揭示出王家卫电影最终极关注的目标是都市人物的精神生存困境。
