Literature Review
English linguist Wilkins (D.Wilkins)said: "Without grammar,
there are very few things that people can express, but without
words, people can't express anything."
Vocabulary plays a vital role in the development of a second
language ability. It directly affects the development of the
ability of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The larger
the vocabulary of the student, the stronger of the ability to understand the language input and the higher the quality of the language material.
It's a common saying in school that "the English test is vocabulary test. Therefore, to conquer English, you must conquer the vocabulary."
The study of second language acquisition is a hot topic studied by linguists and psychologists in recent years. Second language acquisition is a very complex cognitive activity involving many problems. Xu Guozhen pointed out that "Where the English language education of the language is the language of the mainstream language (association, country), that is, the English education as a second language; the English education of other languages in the non-English environment is English education in foreign languages." The development of second language acquisition in China: the budding period (1983-1989): Introduction. Growth period (1990-1999): Theoretical introduction and partial demonstration. Prosperity period (2000-present): The scope of research has increased and the number of review articles has increased. However, most of these studies are more general and lack detailed analysis.
In language teaching, vocabulary is likened to the brick of language learning. Vocabulary is the basic unit of language. It is the basis for cultivating listening, speaking, reading and writing language skills. It is also an important element of communication. Without relevant linguistic knowledge and sufficient vocabulary, other language learning activities will inevitably be affected. Linguists believe that native speakers are more likely to understand discourses that are less grammatical but have correct words, compared to discourses that are impeccable in grammar and incorrect in terms of words. Therefore, vocabulary learning is very important, and vocabulary is the basis for ensuring that English learning continues to deepen and succeed. In China, the second foreign language vocabulary learning is still based on the mechanical mode of teaching words and meanings in isolation, and does not link students' needs with the inherent laws of language vocabulary acquisition.
In terms of vocabulary research, China has published a number of monographs on vocabulary learning, such as "English lexicology research", "English vocabulary advanced course" and so on. And these vocabulary studies have rarely expanded into second foreign language acquisition. The second foreign language acquisition is different from the mother tongue learning. The second foreign language acquisition is based on a system with a specific language rule, and this existing language knowledge will inevitably affect the second language acquisition. Considering the above reasons, the translator chose the second language acquisition expert James Milton's monograph, Measuring Second Language Vocabulary Acquisition, as a translation text, trying to introduce domestic language learners and researchers to the international research frontier in this field. Benefit from reading, and thus effectively improve the level of vocabulary learning / teaching.
James Milton, Ph.D., Director of Graduate Studies, Center for Applied Languages, Swansea University, Wales, UK. He has been engaged in second foreign language acquisition research for many years. He has written many lexical research monographs and published many important influential articles, such as: Vocabulary uptake from informal learning tasks, optimizing a lexical approach to second
Language acquisition, Foreign language vocabulary development through activities in an online
3D environment, and a review of the "Language, Technology, and Learning Review" published by Xu Pinxiang.
In sum, all the above studies have put forward valuable ideas about the Second language vocabulary Acquisition. However, there seems to be a lack of in-depth and detailed analysis and comparison, which will surely shed more light onto the vocabulary Acquisition. Thus my study may hopefully make some contribution in this direction.
